The Army Corp & DEP are still trying to temporarily fix storm water drainage issues in Margate. With that work, public safety issues are still a major concern.

Patti Shavelson Deroo noted a newly installed drainage pipe located just in front of her Douglas Ave porch. According to her Facebook page, she had to locate parents twice (who were enjoying themselves near the water), and share the danger their child was in. ‘The army corps – place an unsecured death trap right next to the biggest kid play place north of the pier’.

To date, in order to fix the ‘too deep’ basin they created, the Army Corp added sand to raise the elevation. It’s a temporary engineering solution they hope will allow storm water runoff to percolate into the graded sand. Any water that does not percolate, will be pumped out into the surf.

All of the basin / moat areas were fenced off per the federal court decision. Orange, plastic fencing work was completed on Aug. 11.  Work on elevated temporary walkways continues.

Every other street in Margate will have an elevated walkway in the northern parts of town.

The  Army Corp must test water for contamination if it collects in these areas. Pumps remain onsite and will be used if 4 inches or more of water collects.

Reports of ‘cliffing’ have been reported in Margate. Steep drop-offs due to beach widening can be 3 feet or more, as seen in this photo taken near the Steel Pier in Atlantic City.

Absecon Island Shore Protection Project is supposed to reduce Margate, Ventnor, Longport & Atlantic City storm damage by using a network of dunes along the beach. This is in conflict with historical evidence that shows most storm damage comes from homes from back bay surge & flooding.

Congressman Frank Lobiondo believes back bay flooding is the real danger to shore property in Margate and Ventnor NJ.
